Private and Public Partners Unite to Combat 10 Neglected Tropical Diseases by 2020

Today, 13 pharmaceutical companies, the U.S., U.K. and U.A.E governments, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Bank and other global health organisations announced a new, coordinated push to accelerate progress toward eliminating or controlling 10 neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) by the end of the decade. Uniting efforts with NTD-endemic countries, partners pledged to bring a unique focus to defeating these diseases and to work together to improve the lives of the 1.4 billion people worldwide affected by NTDs, most of whom are among the world’s poorest. In the largest coordinated effort to date to combat NTDs, the group announced at an event at the Royal College of Physicians that they would: sustain or expand existing drug donation programs to meet demand through 2020; share expertise and compounds to accelerate research and development of new drugs; and provide more than US$785 million to support R&D efforts and strengthen drug distribution and implementation programmes. Partners also endorsed the “London Declaration on Neglected Tropical Diseases,” in which they pledged new levels of collaborative effort and tracking of progress. “Today, we have joined together to increase the impact of our investments and build on the tremendous progress made to date,” said Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. “This innovative approach must serve as a model for solving other global development challenges and will help millions of people build self-sufficiency and overcome the need for aid.” The Gates Foundation announced a five-year, US$363 million commitment to support NTD product and operational research. Increased attention on product human risk and smaller media coverage of drug donations have challenged Pharmaceuticals’ ethical reputation last year, states a report published today by Geneva-based research firm Covalence – Covalence Pharmaceutical Industry Report 2008. The pharmaceutical industry dropped from the first to the third rank of Covalence all-time EthicalQuote ranking across 10 industries. It has been surpassed by Automobiles & Parts and Technology Hardware that progressed greatly because of their environmental actions. Considering the last 12 months (August 2007 – July 2008) Pharmaceuticals achieved only the 8th rank. The Burden of Innovation – Covalence Pharmaceutical Industry Report 2007

Pharmaceutical companies carry increasing ethical risks related to innovation, states a report released on 29 August 2007 by Geneva-based ethical reputation research firm Covalence, Covalence Pharmaceutical Industry Report 2007. These innovation-related risks deal with intellectual property rights, drug pricing, clinical trials, drug side-effects and transparency. In terms of ethical reputation, innovation seems to bring more trouble than benefit to R&D oriented pharmaceutical companies. From July 2006 to July 2007, the pharmaceutical industry only ranks ninth out of ten industries in Covalence’s EthicalQuote reputation ranking. While spectacular announcements are heard every day, and innovation is scrutinized by suspicious observers, pharmaceutical companies have to develop and invent additional ways to be recognized as sustainable, using lessons learned during pioneer time. Within the industry (14 among the largest Pharmaceutical companies in market capitalization), the EthicalQuote reputation curves calculated from 2002 to July 2007 show GlaxoSmithKline leading the list ahead of Bristol Myers Squibb and Johnson & Johnson, while Takeda and Schering Plough occupy the last positions; Novartis ranks fourth and Roche fifth. GSK, BMS, J&J top ethical ranking list by Covalence

GlaxoSmithKline is at the top of ethical-monitoring firm Covalence’s ranking list, followed by Bristol-Myers Squibb and Johnson & Johnson. The quarterly report, which ranks the top 10 highest-ranking pharmas, reveals that the amount of revenue a company earns does not necessarily correspond to its ethical reputation. Pfizer, the world’s highest revenue-generating drug company, only placed fourth on the ethical table, whereas the next highest earner, Sanofi-Aventis barely made it into the ethical top 10, as did Merck & Co, which is sixth-largest in terms of revenue. Fourth-largest revenue generator AstraZeneca and tenth revenue ranking Wyeth did not make the top 10 ethical list. GSK ranked third in earnings and first on the ethical list. Abbott Laboratories and Boehringer Ingelheim didn’t make the top 10 revenue list, but they did make the top 10 ethical list.

The Ethically Challenged: How Pharma Fares

In these ethically challenging times, which drugmaker has its act together? Covalence, a research group based in Geneva that tracks ethical reputations, recently released its quarterly update in which various industrial sectors were examined. The firm compiles its rankings and charts by collecting reports – both positive and negative recent news – from the Internet and an ‘open network of correspondents’ among various civil-society groups, researchers, consultants and the like. The data is then coded, quantified and synthetized into curves and volumes. The rankings are, of course, relative. They merely compare drugmakers to one another and don’t examine ethics in absolute terms. In other words, company A is perceived as more ethical than company B, but that’s not the same thing as saying one or both companies are, or aren’t, particularly adept at adopting and exercising ethical practices.

Ethical reputations of top pharma firms revealed

The latest ethical reputations of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies have been revealed, with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) emerging as big pharma’s Mother Theresa, according to a recently-released compilation by Geneva-based ethical-monitoring firm Covalence. Interestingly, earning power and ethical nature do not necessarily appear to go hand in hand. Covalence has published its quarterly ethical reputation ranking, highlighting the top 10 highest-ranking pharmaceutical companies, as well as those which have made the most progress in the first quarter of 2007, and the companies who have received the most positive news coverage.
