New Panasonic investment hinges on Thai recycling law

The Japanese consumer electronics giant Panasonic is willing to invest in a recycling facility in Thailand, but only after the country legislates home-appliance recycling, according to company executives. “From the business perspective and strategy, we’re ready. What we are waiting for is just the country’s governing legislation on this issue,” said Hirotaka Murakami, the CEO of Panasonic Group in Thailand. Thailand has been trying to draft legislation on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) for eight years, to be in line with the European Union directive, which required manufacturers, distributors and importers to clean up waste by December 2006. The effort focuses mainly on 10 product groups including household appliances, IT and technology equipment, lighting equipment, electrical and electronic tools, toys, medical equipment, monitoring and control instruments and automatic dispensers.
