Foxconn prevents suicides and creates jobs

Foxconn is holding rallies at its factories to improve the satisfaction of its employees. The Taiwanese company, a subsidiary of Hon Hai Precision Industry, announced wage increases and more break times during work to reduce stress and prevent suicides; safety nets have also been installed. This year 12 Foxconn employees have committed suicide so far.

The world’s largest manufacturer of electronic components – Apple, Dell and HP are among its clients, will hire 400,000 workers in China in the coming year. The company plans to build factories closer to workers’ homes.

Among the news items covering this topic, two  thirds have been coded as positive by Covalence analysts, and one third as negative, reflecting such statements – China Labor Bulletin spokesman Geoffrey Crothall: “I don’t think today’s event is going to achieve anything except provide a bit of theater. (…)  Basically, what Foxconn needs to do is treat its workers like decent human beings and pay them a decent wage. It’s not rocket science.”
