Cosmetic giants slapped over claims

The makers of the some of the best known anti-wrinkle creams on the market have been told off for misleading adverts which target women who want to look younger. Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration has rejected claims made by Lancome, Clinique, Estee Lauder and L’Oreal that their face creams remove wrinkles. Skin experts in New Zealand say women should heed the TGA’s warning. “Many of the more expensive products provide no better benefit than a lot of the cheaper products on the market. In fact, what you’re buying with those expensive products is the packaging,” says dermatologist Dr Nicholas Birchall. Complaints across the Tasman have forced cosmetic companies to withdraw advertisements that claim products are therapeutic rather than purely cosmetic. But the consumer watchdog Choice wants cosmetic giants hit harder, and fined for misleading the public. “By the time that a complaint is made against the product, it takes weeks or even months for that complaint to be processed,” says Choice spokesperson Viola Korczak.
